The Ballard Goodwill at 6400 8th Ave NW is about to sound a lot different.

Brian Rauschenbach, the co-founder of Shibuya Hi-Fi on Leary Avenue, is taking over a section of the thrift store for a month-long pop-up stocked with vinyl records, vintage turntables, speakers, and audiophile gear.

The pop-up launches with a free DJ party on July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. Rauschenbach will spin funk, disco, and boogie on vinyl all evening.

What's inside the pop-up

Evergreen Goodwill partnered with Rauschenbach to fill the space with items pulled from his world: record players, speakers, vinyl across genres, plus clothing and accessories influenced by '90s grunge, sneaker culture, and streetwear. The pop-up runs through Saturday, August 2, and is free to browse during regular store hours.

A spokesperson for Evergreen Goodwill told My Ballard the organization approached Rauschenbach because of his work curating vintage audio equipment and fashion, and his longtime connection to secondhand shopping. The goal is to show customers the range of what thrift stores carry beyond the usual racks.

"Thrifting has been a part of my life since the 90s," Rauschenbach said. "When I was in college, I would hit up as many places as I could to be able to add to my collection of vintage items."

Who is Brian Rauschenbach

Rauschenbach opened Shibuya Hi-Fi in 2023 in the former Cedar Room space on Leary Avenue. The bar is modeled on Tokyo's hi-fi listening bars, with vinyl-only sessions on a high-fidelity system in a dedicated room. Those sessions frequently sell out, and CBS News has profiled the bar as part of a national story on intentional music listening.

Timing: Seafoodfest weekend

The kickoff party lands on the same evening as the opening night of the 52nd annual Ballard Music & Seafoodfest, the free three-day festival running July 10 through July 12, on Ballard Avenue NW. Organizers expect more than 75,000 people over the weekend. The Goodwill is a short walk from the festival footprint.

Road closures begin at 6 a.m. Friday, July 10, on Ballard Avenue NW between NW Market Street and Vernon Place NW, and on 22nd Avenue NW between NW Market Street and Shilshole Avenue NW.

What's next

No additional DJ nights or programming beyond the July 10 kickoff have been announced. The pop-up is open during regular Ballard Goodwill hours through August 2.
