Seattle Public Schools high school students can apply to put their art on the walls of the new Memorial Stadium.

The district announced the Memorial Stadium Art Wall Program on Oct. 21, inviting student artists to design large-scale murals inspired by the stadium's legacy and its role in the community.

Selected designs will be professionally printed and installed as long-term features of the venue.

SPS high school students can apply individually or in pairs. Applicants must demonstrate a genuine passion for visual art and a commitment to completing their work, according to the district.

Applications are due Friday, Oct. 30, submitted through the district's online form using an SPS account. Selected artists will be notified Nov. 20.

The program gives students professional public art experience they can use for portfolios, resumes and college applications, according to the district.

The opportunity arrives as the Memorial Stadium redevelopment enters its final stretch. The project reached a construction milestone on Sept. 25, when the final structural beam was raised into place at a topping-out ceremony attended by SPS Superintendent Ben Shuldiner, Seattle Center Acting Director Randy Engstrom, Sellen Construction CEO Scott Redman and Seattle Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke. The public-private partnership between SPS, the City of Seattle and One Roof Sports & Entertainment is on track for completion by September 2027, according to the city's Art Beat blog.

Student art already has a presence at the site. A temporary installation called Under the Same Sky, by artists Stevie Shao and Cristina Martinez, lines the stadium's construction fencing with panels painted from student-inspired symbols and doodles. That project engaged students from The Center School, according to Art Beat.

The district's announcement does not specify how many murals will be selected, whether chosen artists will receive a stipend, or how the program is being promoted across schools. The full project description, selection criteria and application form are available on the SPS website.
