West Seattle's Alaska Junction is getting a dedicated adult creative studio. T

The Works Seattle, which has operated out of pop-up locations for eight years, will open a permanent storefront at 4540 California Ave. SW in September 2026.

Founder Kellie Phelan started the business in her kitchen. It grew into a community that serves more than 5,000 students a year, according to a profile in the Westside Seattle newspaper published July 10.

The studio moved through various spaces before settling most recently in Fremont. The new Alaska Junction location is a homecoming for Phelan, who lives in West Seattle.

The move was personal. According to the Westside Seattle profile, the decision to put down permanent roots was shaped by support Phelan's family received from the West Seattle community during a difficult period involving her daughter's health.

The studio at 4540 California Ave. SW will be a custom build-out from the ground up. It will host instructor-led workshops in printmaking, natural dyeing, embroidery, floral arranging, and stained glass, along with private events.

The signature offering is the Maker Bar, a drop-in concept that requires no reservation and no experience. Visitors walk in, choose from high-quality materials and guided projects like moss wall art, and leave with a finished piece for under $50.

Seattle Today, a local Instagram account, profiled Phelan on June 18 and reported that she considers the Maker Bar the one thing every visitor should try.

The address puts The Works on the Junction's main commercial strip, alongside Husky Deli, Easy Street Records, and Molly Moon's. The corridor does not have a dedicated drop-in creative studio at present.

The Works also sells DIY kits, a product line born during the pandemic. Each kit includes materials, instructions, and a curated playlist. The kits remain a permanent part of the business.

No specific opening date within September has been announced. Updates are available at theworksseattle.com.

What we don't know yet: The Works has not announced a grand opening event, pre-registration date, or class schedule for the new location. We'll update this story when those details are released.
