Capitol Hill's Analog Coffee is opening a second location on Lake Union, ending a 15-year pledge to stay a one-shop operation.

City signage permits show the cafe is preparing to move into the former Starbucks drive-through space at the AGC Building and Marina, 1200 Westlake Ave N., as first reported by CHS Capitol Hill Seattle Wednesday, Oct. 7. No opening date has been announced.

Founders Danny Hanlon and Tim Hayden started Analog in early 2011 with walk-up French press and pour-over service on Summit Ave E while the full cafe was still under construction. They built a loyal following on a simple promise: this would be the only coffee shop they would ever open.

That promise held for 15 years.

The Westlake space sits at ground level beneath a 10-story office tower on the west side of Lake Union, adjacent to a 92-slip marina and the Westlake bicycle track. The shuttered Starbucks had drive-through capability, which would mark a new format for Analog if the shop uses it.

In a December 2021 profile marking Analog's 10th anniversary, Hayden described the founding philosophy. "We really value that independent shop model, we weren't interested in being roasters," he told CHS Capitol Hill Seattle at the time. "We love interacting with people and creating a special spot in the neighborhood."

Analog is one of several independent operators moving into spaces Starbucks vacated across Seattle. Starbucks closed 10 Seattle stores in 2025 as part of a nationwide reduction. The company announced plans to shutter 250 more North American locations by the end of its 2026 fiscal year, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Several independent businesses are filling those gaps. Narrative Coffee is taking the former Starbucks at 6th and Stewart. Coffee Tab is opening its third location at 23rd and Jackson.

Anchorhead Coffee is moving into the Fremont vacancy. In Ballard, the Starbucks at NW Market St and 22nd Ave NW closed in September 2025, and family-owned Petite Pierre Bakery is taking that space, My Ballard reported. A second Ballard Starbucks, at 999 NW Leary Way, closed in September 2026 after just eight months.

Analog has not publicly announced the expansion. The original cafe remains open at 235 Summit Ave E on Capitol Hill.
