A 450-square-foot blank wall at 1530 NW Market St. needs an artist, and the Ballard Alliance is paying $3,425 for the job.
The west side of the Hjarta Condominiums building has a 30-foot-wide, 15-foot-high surface the organization wants transformed into a neighborhood mural. Applications are open through Monday, Aug. 31, with the budget covering design, painting and materials.
The only creative requirement: the artwork should be relevant to Ballard. Beyond that, the call for artists welcomes open interpretation.
Applicants need to email Wren Wilson at [email protected] with their name, contact info, examples of previous murals or artwork, and a short statement on why they're a good fit. Preliminary design ideas are welcome but not required. The selected artist must demonstrate the ability to paint at large scale and will collaborate with the property owners on the final concept.
Artists will be notified by Friday, Sept. 11. Organizers are targeting a mid-October completion, though the painting schedule will depend on design work and weather.
The project follows recent mural activity in the neighborhood. In May, Brewery District Mural Week brought four large-scale murals to locations along Leary Way and 14th Avenue, painted by artists Stevie Shao, They Drift, B Line Dot and Craig Cundiff. That effort was organized by Aaron Asis with support from the office of Councilmember Dan Strauss.
