Brandon Roy is back on the sideline at Garfield High School.
The former NBA All-Star and Garfield graduate will lead the Bulldogs' boys basketball program for the 2026-27 season, Seattle Public Schools announced. The district is formally introducing Roy at a 1 p.m. press conference Thursday, June 25, in Room 121 at the Central District school, 400 23rd Ave.
Roy was fired from the same position in September 2025, the Seattle Times reported at the time. The district has not publicly detailed the reasons for that dismissal. Less than a year later, he's back at his alma mater.
His coaching resume at Garfield already includes a 2023 WIAA 3A state championship. In that title game, Garfield's Legend Smiley scored a game-high 30 points under Roy's coaching. Smiley went on to sign with Oregon State.
Roy's playing career traces a Central District-to-pro pipeline that few coaches anywhere can match. He starred at Garfield, scored 1,477 points across four seasons at the University of Washington, and was drafted sixth overall by Minnesota in the 2006 NBA Draft before being traded to Portland on draft night.
He won NBA Rookie of the Year in 2007 and earned three consecutive All-Star selections before knee injuries forced his retirement.
His son, Brandon Roy Jr., followed the same path through Garfield and now wears his father's retired No. 3 jersey at UW.
Principal Dr. Tarance Hart and Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner are both scheduled to speak at Thursday's introduction, which is being livestreamed by SPS-TV.
