Fred Couples, the 66-year-old Beacon Hill native who learned to swing a club at Jefferson Park, finished two strokes short of his first Boeing Classic title Sunday, Aug. 16. His final-round 67 landed him in a tie for fourth at 10-under 206.

The win went to Stewart Cink instead.

Cink, 53, buried a birdie on the par-5 18th in a sudden-death playoff to beat Miguel Angel Jiménez and claim his fifth PGA Tour Champions victory of 2026 at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. He closed with a 7-under 65 after starting the day four strokes back in a tie for 10th. Jiménez, the 62-year-old 2022 Boeing Classic champion, forced the playoff with a sizzling 64 that included birdies on his final six holes. But his tee shot found a bunker on the playoff hole, and he settled for par.

"I saw a lot of faces on Friday and Sunday, the two days I played with Fred, a lot of people were repeat customers coming out and watching our group," Cink told reporters after the win, according to the Seattle Times. "And it's not because of me, it's because of Fred, I'm well aware of that. But it was great. I love Fred."

Couples, a World Golf Hall of Fame member and 1992 Masters champion who attended O'Dea High School, was playing in his 14th Boeing Classic. He has finished third four times in prior appearances but has never won. The tie for fourth jumped him 20 spots in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, from No. 79 to No. 59.

Cink's win made him the first player with five victories in a single PGA Tour Champions season since Steve Stricker won six in 2023. It also snapped the Boeing Classic's run of five consecutive international champions and avenged his runner-up finish at Snoqualmie Ridge last year.

The $2.3 million event, now in its 21st year, drew 25 of the top 30 players in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Søren Kjeldsen of Denmark finished third at 11-under 205. Steven Alker, who held the 36-hole lead entering Sunday, shot 71 and fell into the seven-way tie for fourth alongside Couples, Ernie Els, David Toms, George McNeill, Jerry Kelly and Steve Flesch.

Cink has led the Charles Schwab Cup standings all season and extended that lead with the win.
