The 35,715-square-foot Amazon Fresh store that closed on Aurora Avenue North in February now has a new tenant.

Hashi Market, a Japanese grocery and lifestyle chain owned by Takayama International Inc., signed a lease to fill the entire former Amazon Fresh space at 13025 Aurora Ave. N., according to The Registry. The store will be the chain's first location in the Pacific Northwest. The Puget Sound Business Journal first reported the lease.

No opening date has been announced.

The signing makes Aurora's former Amazon Fresh the second such space in Seattle to land a new tenant in one week. On Monday, Sept. 28, Starbird Chicken, a San Francisco chain founded by Aaron Noveshen in 2016, opened inside the former Amazon Fresh on Fauntleroy Way SW in West Seattle. Starbird took over 3,000 square feet of that 10,000-square-foot space. Its Washington franchise partner plans about 15 Seattle-area locations out of 17 statewide, with Capitol Hill's former Amazon Fresh space next.

Hashi Market opened its first U.S. store in New York City's Midtown South neighborhood in late 2024. The chain now operates six locations in New York, according to KRON4, and describes itself as combining a fresh-food supermarket, mini department store and catering service under one roof. The company plans additional stores in California, Colorado and Massachusetts.

The Aurora Shopping Center, at 13201 Aurora Ave. N., has been owned by Merlone Geier Partners since 2013. The Daily Journal of Commerce reported the complex is pushing an occupancy rate above 91%. Hashi Market will join Planet Fitness, Ulta Beauty, Ross Dress for Less and Daiso in the center.

Amazon announced in January 2026 that it would close all 57 Fresh stores and 15 Go locations nationwide. The company said in a statement it had not created a distinctive enough customer experience or economic model for large-scale expansion. Most stores closed by Feb. 1.

The closures left gaps across Seattle. At the Central District location at 23rd and Jackson, GeekWire reported more than 30 people lined up on the final day, with some waiting over 30 minutes to enter. That space, along with former Amazon Fresh locations in Federal Way and Factoria, remains vacant.

The Hashi Market lease fills one of the largest empty storefronts on Highway 99. Buildout and permitting timelines have not been disclosed.
