Magnolia Lutheran Church's free concert series returns with two summer events built around its pipe organ: a solo recital spanning four centuries of repertoire and a silent film screening with live accompaniment.
The Concerts at MLC series launched its 2026 season on May 29 with a chamber music evening featuring the Frisson Mixed Trio. The series continues with two more events this summer.
On Saturday, July 18 at 7 p.m., the church's Director of Music Ministries, Mary Douglas, performs "Mary Douglas at the Console," a program including works by J.S. Bach, Alain, Florence Price, A.D. Miller, Balbastre, and Pachelbel. The concert will also premiere a new piece by Massachusetts-based composer Manar Hashmi. A reception follows.
Douglas grew up in Mukilteo and South Everett and holds degrees in music and biology from Bard College in New York. Beyond her church role running the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir, she performs as half of the Goldfinch Duo with guitarist and theorbist Niall Ransford and has appeared with New York's The Orchestra Now.
On Saturday, August 8, theater organist Sawyer Best will accompany a screening of Buster Keaton's 1924 silent comedy "Sherlock Jr." on the church's pipe organ. A start time has not yet been announced. Best is the Youth Representative for the Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society and has studied under noted theater organists including Jonas Nordwall and Donna Parker. Movie snacks will be provided.
Both events are free. The church suggests donations of $15 (general) or $5 (youth and American Guild of Organists members), with all proceeds funding future concerts in the series.
Magnolia Lutheran Church is located at 2414 31st Ave W, Seattle. Details and updates are available at magnolialutheranchurch.com/concerts-at-mlc.
