Seventy-five new grocery jobs are coming to Madison Valley when PCC Community Markets opens its 17th store on Oct. 14.

The 18,000-square-foot location at 2925 E. Madison St. sits beneath the Arbory, an 82-unit apartment building with a 140-car underground garage.

The site once held City People's Garden Store, a neighborhood fixture that closed to make way for the six-story mixed-use development, Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reported.

PCC first announced plans for the store in 2016. The project stalled for years as the developer and neighborhood groups clashed over the building's scope, the Seattle Times reported.

A decade later, the co-op is finally moving in.

"We signed this lease ten years ago, and it's been a long road to get here as the project worked through the local process, with input from the neighborhood along the way," acting CEO Amy Chow said in an April announcement of the planned fall opening.

The store will carry a full grocery, produce and deli assortment. Progressive Grocer reported the location will also feature in-house sushi and a pizza program using flour from Cairnspring Mills, a local organic grain company.

Store director Nick Novak, who joined PCC in 2022 and has more than 25 years in the grocery industry, will lead the Madison Valley team. Many of the 75 staffers are transferring from other PCC locations.

The opening arrives as PCC rebounds financially. The co-op reported $2.8 million in income in July, according to the Seattle Times.

That marks a sharp turnaround from 2024, when PCC reported less than half a million dollars, and from roughly two years before that, when it posted its first losses since the 1990s.

Founded in 1953 by 15 local families as a food-buying club, PCC now operates 16 stores across the Puget Sound region. The Madison Valley location will be its 17th.

Holly Cowles, executive director of Bailey-Boushay House, a nearby nonprofit that provides care for people living with HIV/AIDS and other complex conditions, said in a statement to the Seattle Times that the organization welcomes PCC as a neighbor.

PCC has also joined Madison Valley residents and businesses in pushing for a crosswalk signal on Madison Street to improve pedestrian safety near the store.
