If you're a parent in Queen Anne, Magnolia, or Ballard trying to sign your kid up for swim lessons this summer, options are limited but there is a workaround.

Queen Anne Pool, the 1977 landmark at 1920 First Ave. W. next to McClure Middle School, won't reopen until November 2027. The replacement capacity lands mostly at Mounger Pool in Magnolia and Ballard Pool.

Seattle Parks and Recreation closed Queen Anne Pool in November 2025 after the facility began losing approximately 400,000 gallons of water per month, according to Seattle Parks. Testing confirmed the leaks are in underground inflow pipes beneath the pool, making them inaccessible without a full rebuild. Even after crews completed all reachable repairs, testing in March 2026 showed no reduction in water loss.

According to an update from District 7 Councilmember Bob Kettle's office, shared by the Magnolia Community Council, the way the plumbing was originally built means Seattle Parks cannot isolate the problem for a temporary fix. The project has been transferred to Seattle Parks' capital projects team, and the permanent repair will be part of a $21 million Citywide Pool Renovation Project.

For summer 2026, Seattle Parks is adding 1,200 swim lesson spots at Mounger Pool, roughly triple what Queen Anne Pool previously offered in summer. Public swim times at Mounger will also expand. Summer Swim League capacity at Ballard Pool is increasing to absorb additional demand.

Registration for summer 2026 swim lessons opened to the general public on March 31. Check seattle.gov/parks for current availability. Seattle Parks offers scholarship pricing, with scholarship holders getting early registration access.

Starting in fall 2026, Ballard Pool will add Saturday afternoon swim times. Evans Pool and Medgar Evers Pool will add Sunday operations and early morning lap swim. Combined, those three pools will add more than 650 swim lesson spots per week.

Fall registration opens for scholarship holders on Tuesday, August 4, and for the general public on Tuesday, August 11.

The Queen Anne Community Council surveyed residents on the closure's impact. About 150 people responded, raising concerns about overcrowding at neighboring pools, disruptions to swim lessons and youth programs, transportation challenges for families without cars, and water safety.

The Magnolia Community Council holds its final meeting before summer break on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension in Magnolia. The agenda includes a dedicated segment on the Queen Anne Pool closure, survey findings, and Mounger Pool operations. The meeting is also available via Zoom (Meeting ID: 841 7634 4515, Passcode: 984298).

This is the last MCC meeting until Tuesday, September 15. Residents who want to weigh in on pool access before summer programming begins can attend or join online on June 16. For updates on the Queen Anne Pool reopening, sign up at seattle.gov/parks/pools/queen-anne-pool.
