Cristian Roldan scored in the 90th minute Thursday, Oct. 1, lifting Seattle Sounders FC to a 2-1 comeback win over Sporting Kansas City at Lumen Field.
The goal, Roldan's fifth of the season, pushed the Sounders' winning streak to three and their unbeaten run to eight games. Seattle (10-9-8, 38 points) sits seventh in the Western Conference with the playoff push accelerating.
It was a different story at halftime. Sporting KC's André Luiz beat goalkeeper Andrew Thomas with a left-footed finish in the 44th minute after Stephen Afrifa deflected a clearance attempt deep in Seattle's end. Luiz, acquired from Greek club Olympiacos in August, has five goals in his last four matches.
Head coach Brian Schmetzer sent on Sebastian Gomez at the break, and the move paid off seven minutes later. Morris sprinted past the Sporting KC defense to reach a long ball, then poked it back to a trailing Gomez while falling to the ground, according to the Sounders' match recap. Gomez finished with one touch for the equalizer in the 52nd minute.
It was Gomez's first MLS goal.
Thomas kept Seattle level through a barrage. Sporting KC put 11 shots on target to Seattle's seven, and Thomas finished with nine saves.
The winner came on a counterattack. Jordan Morris played Roldan in with a through ball that Sporting KC defender Wyatt Meyer reached first, but the deflection bounced off Roldan and past the goalkeeper, as KOMO News reported. Roldan now ranks sixth in club history with 48 career goals in all competitions.
The turnaround has been sharp. A club-record 13-match MLS winless streak dating to May 13 had the Sounders reeling as recently as Sept. 19, when they drew 3-3 at Colorado.
After that draw, Roldan told The Seattle Times, "What we saw in the second half (Saturday) was a team that wasn't scared to attack. Wasn't scared to lose this game."
Four days after the Colorado draw, Seattle snapped the skid with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake. The Sounders have scored 11 goals in their last five contests and have not lost since Aug. 19 against Austin FC.
Tacoma Defiance forward Mark Bronnik, who leads Defiance with 13 goals in 2026, appeared as a late substitute in the 89th minute via a short-term agreement. A crowd of 28,587 watched the match under partly cloudy skies and 64-degree temperatures.
Seattle heads east for two road matches: Saturday, Oct. 10 at the New England Revolution (4:30 p.m. PT, Apple TV) and Wednesday, Oct. 14 at FC Dallas (5:30 p.m. PT, Apple TV).
