The Ballard Tool Library, the neighborhood lending program where residents borrow everything from drills to ladders, could get a permanent home if Sustainable Ballard wins a $40,000 credit union grant.
The nonprofit, which has operated for more than 20 years, is one of 18 finalists for BECU's 2026 People's Choice Award, part of the credit union's annual People Helping People Awards program. The finalist that collects the most public votes takes the top prize. Voting runs through 5 p.m. Pacific time on Friday, Oct. 16, and anyone 18 or older can cast a ballot with one vote per email address.
Voters do not need to live in Ballard or even in Washington to participate, the nonprofit said. Voting opened Monday, Oct. 5, giving the public less than two weeks to weigh in.
Jenny Heins, Sustainable Ballard's executive director, said the money would expand the group's reach. "If Sustainable Ballard has ever helped you, connected you with your neighbors, taught you something new, or inspired you to live a little more sustainably, this is a chance to help us reach even more people …" Heins told My Ballard.
The organization said the grant would help secure a long-term home for the Tool Library, one of its most visible programs. Sustainable Ballard also runs food recovery efforts, community gardens, the annual Edible Garden Tour and the Sustainable Ballard Festival. The 23rd annual festival drew neighbors to Loyal Heights Community Center on Sept. 26.
Even if Sustainable Ballard does not finish first, every finalist is guaranteed at least $15,000. Winners also receive a $2,500 glide-path grant each year for two years after the initial award. The People's Choice is one of five award categories; the top prize, Member Volunteer of the Year, is worth $50,000.
The awards celebration is scheduled for Dec. 10. Residents can vote on BECU's voting page.
