Families at Mt. Baker Beach, a free lakefront swimming beach serving Southeast Seattle, arrived Wednesday evening to find no lifeguards on duty. The department warned swimmers to stay out of the water.

Seattle Parks & Recreation pulled lifeguard coverage from both Mt. Baker Beach and Magnuson Beach on the evening of Aug. 5 due to staffing shortages, leaving two of the city's nine lifeguarded beaches unprotected simultaneously during the summer season.

The department announced on X at approximately 5:54 p.m. that Magnuson Beach in Sand Point would have no coverage for the rest of the evening. Less than an hour later, at roughly 6:48 p.m., a second post confirmed Mt. Baker Beach had also gone uncovered.

The disparity in the department's response was stark. When Magnuson lost its guards, Seattle Parks directed swimmers to nearby Matthews Beach, which stayed open with additional lifeguards. When Mt. Baker Beach lost coverage, the department offered no alternative location, telling families only to stay out of the water and monitor air quality.

Mt. Baker Beach, at 2521 Lake Park Dr. S, is free and accessible by bus, making it one of the few no-cost water access points in Southeast Seattle. Its 34-space parking lot fills regularly on warm days. The beach features a roped swim area and a floating dock with a diving board.

Compounding closures

The staffing gaps came during a week when outdoor recreation options were already shrinking. Seattle Parks closed all 25 wading pools early on Tuesday, Aug. 4, due to wildfire smoke, and temperatures were forecast in the 90s.

Racially, darker skinned children ages 10 to 14 drown in swimming pools at 7.6 times the rate of lighter skinned children, according to a 2026 American Academy of Pediatrics technical report. The AAP found that lifeguard shortages have disproportionately left beaches and pools serving underserved urban communities unguarded.

The Trust for Public Land's 2026 ParkScore ranking, which placed Seattle eighth nationally, found that high-income neighborhoods had 36% more park space than the city median while low-income neighborhoods fell well below it, according to the Kitsap Sun.

Seattle Parks has not publicly addressed the Aug. 5 closures or disclosed its current lifeguard vacancy rate. Interim Superintendent Michele Finnegan, who took over in January after former director AP Diaz's contract was not renewed, has not commented.

Mt. Baker Beach is scheduled to remain lifeguarded through Sept. 7. Magnuson Beach's shorter season ends Aug. 23.
