Theatre lovers from Queen Anne, Ballard, and Magnolia residents have a unique reason to make the trek across town this fall.

For neighbors used to catching shows at Seattle Rep or Book-It at Seattle Center, ArtsWest offers something a little different — an intimate, independent stage with a track record of sharp, socially engaged programming.

ArtsWest Playhouse is bringing five productions to the stage, brought together by the theme of exploring human existence.

The five show season begins in September.

Here's what's coming:

  1. The Chinese Lady (Thursday, September 17 – Sunday, October 11, 2026): Lloyd Suh's play tells the true story of Afong Moy, a 14-year-old brought from China's Guangzhou Province in 1834 and put on display in America as a living exhibit. The play earned multiple Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominations after its 2022 off-Broadway run at The Public Theater. For Ballard residents in particular, this one carries extra resonance. Ballard's own history as a Scandinavian fishing and working-class immigrant community gives it a complicated, textured relationship with questions of who gets to belong in America.
  2. Snowed In (Saturday, November 28 – Sunday, December 20, 2026): A returning holiday musical following four artists on a cozy retreat who battle a blizzard and rising tensions while trying to write the perfect holiday show. Doors open the weekend after Thanksgiving, which makes it a natural alternative to holiday shopping chaos.
  3. Red (Thursday, February 4 – Sunday, February 28, 2027): John Logan's six-time Tony Award winner, including Best Play, puts abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and his assistant in a battle over artistic purpose. Rothko's iconic paintings are created live on stage. Queen Anne residents who are fans of the Seattle Art Museum or the Frye — both of which have shown Rothko's work — will find this one particularly satisfying. It's also worth noting that Rothko himself spent formative years in the Pacific Northwest.
  4. Anthropology (Thursday, April 8 – Sunday, May 2, 2027): A woman named Merril uses AI to recreate her missing sister, blurring grief and obsession in a race against time.
  5. Pygmalion (Thursday, June 10 – Saturday, July 3, 2027): Pop star Dorian Belle hires Petty Young Goons, a rap group from Chicago, for a reality TV show in this sharp comedy exploring cultural and racial appropriation. This is a great pick for a summer evening when you want theater that doesn't take itself too seriously but still leaves you with something to talk about over drinks after.
