Anton Hjalmarsson carried the ball half the length of the field, cut through Ventura County Fusion's backline, and chipped the keeper to tie the Western Conference Final 1-1 in the 10th minute Saturday, July 25.

It was the kind of goal that should launch a championship run.

Instead, Ventura goalkeeper Miguel-Angel Hernandez denied Hjalmarsson one-on-one in the 29th minute, denied him again from close range in the 41st, and seconds later Jorge Lopez buried the winner at the other end to make it 2-1. That scoreline held. Ballard FC's 2026 season is over.

The loss at Atwood Stadium in Flint, Michigan, ended a 14-2-1 campaign that included a perfect 9-0-0 home record at Interbay Stadium, 48 goals scored, a fourth consecutive Northwest Division title, and two white-knuckle playoff wins just to reach this point, according to the club's season recap.

None of it was enough to get past Ballard's postseason nemesis.

Same opponent, same stage, same heartbreak

This was the fourth Western Conference Final between Ballard and Ventura County in five seasons. The all-time playoff series is now knotted 2-2.

Ballard lost the 2022 conference final to Ventura, beat them in 2023 en route to a national championship, beat them again in 2025 on the way to the national final, and fell Friday in a near-mirror of last year's result — same scoreline, reversed winner.

Ventura's William Pierce opened the scoring in the 8th minute, assisted by Noe Morales-Moya. Hjalmarsson answered two minutes later with his eighth goal of the season, a solo run set up by an Alexander Villanueva flicked header.

But Hernandez's heroics — including a stoppage-time save on a Joschi Schelb volley from 10 yards — kept Ballard from finding an equalizer across the final 49 minutes.

Head coach Mutunda Kwesele shifted to a 4-4-2 at halftime, pairing Hjalmarsson with NCAA All-American striker Joe Highfield. Highfield had a point-blank header saved by Hernandez in the 68th minute.

A season of near-misses on the road

Ballard entered the playoffs without five University of Washington players — Zach Ramsey, Stockton Short, Cameron Cruz, Emmett Layman, and Jordy Dierks — who left for competition in Peru.

The depleted roster still produced a penalty-shootout win over Utah United and a 93rd-minute winner against Colorado Storm in the semifinal before running out of magic in Flint.

"It was the best weekend in club history, full stop," Vice President Camden Francis told USL League Two on July 24, describing the Interbay playoff weekend that preceded the conference final.

Sister club Salmon Bay FC had just won the USL W League national championship at the same venue, making the organization the first in USL history to see both its men's and women's pre-professional teams claim national titles.

The 2026 USL League Two Final is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, at Atwood Stadium between Flint City Bucks and Vermont Green FC.

Ballard won't be there, but the Bridges' fifth season still produced the club's best-ever regular-season record and a home fortress that no opponent cracked.
