Seattle Storm center Awa Fam scored 17 points in her first senior World Cup game, leading Spain past host Germany 83-53 in Berlin.

The 6-foot-4 rookie from Alicante, Spain, added four rebounds in Friday, Sept. 4's blowout opener at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft leads all league rookies in rebounds (5.7 per game) and offensive rebounds (1.9), ranks second in blocks (0.9) and holds the Storm franchise record for most offensive rebounds by a rookie.

Spain's opening blowout was short-lived.

On Saturday, Sept. 5, Mali pulled off the tournament's first major upset, beating Spain 82-73 after outscoring the Spaniards 31-19 in the third quarter.

Fam struggled, scoring four points on seven shot attempts, according to ESPN. Iyana Martín led Spain with 20 points.

All four Group A teams sit at 1-1. Spain leads the group on point differential (+21) and plays Japan on Monday, Sept. 7, in its final group-stage game.

"It's country over club now. … We are competitors. That's just how it is and we wouldn't have it any other way," Fam told the Seattle Times on Sept. 2, before the tournament began.

Fam is not the only Storm player in Berlin. Teammates Dominique Malonga (France), Ezi Magbegor (Australia) and Jade Melbourne (Australia) are also competing. Storm head coach Sonia Raman traveled to Germany to watch all of their group-stage games.

This is Fam's first senior World Cup. She won silver medals with Spain's youth teams at the 2023 U19 and 2022 U17 tournaments. FIBA previewed her as a player who "will bring power and skills in the paint," and ESPN described Fam and guard Iyana Martín as Spain's "young tandem of 20-year-old stars."

The sixth-ranked Spanish team, coached by Miguel Méndez, is chasing its fourth medal in five World Cup editions. Spain took third in 2010 and 2018 and reached the 2024 title game but did not qualify for the 2022 tournament.

The WNBA paused its season for the World Cup. The Storm (8-32) return Sept. 17 for their final four regular-season games. All World Cup games stream on HBO Max, with 17 also airing on TNT and truTV. The knockout round begins Sept. 10.
